Facebook video interview with Doris García Rivera highlights the vital ministry of the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico

García Rivera is seminary’s first female president

June 15, 2017

The Rev. Dr. Chip Hardwick, director of Theology, Formation and Evangelism, conducted a lively interview with the Rev. Dr. Doris García Rivera, president of the Seminario Evangélico de Puerto Rico (SEPR) on the PC(USA)’s Facebook page March 23.

García Rivera, the first woman to hold the position of president, assumed office August 1, 2014, and was installed on September 28. The seminary—which is related to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) by covenant agreement—was founded in 1919. SEPR’s primary purpose is the training of pastoral and lay leaders for service in the ministry and the mission of God’s people in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States.

In the interview, García Rivera provides an overview of the seminary, the critical issues with which the staff and administration are wrestling, and what Presbyterians contribute to the campus supported by six different denominations. She also shares the exciting news of a $10,000 DREAM Grant check, which was presented to the Boriquén Synod in Puerto Rico to enhance the distance learning technologies at SEPR. Tony De La Rosa, interim executive director of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, offered the check to SEPR and García Rivera during the afternoon plenary of the spring 2017 meeting of the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board (PMAB).
