Sextuplets baptized — first in history of PC(USA)

PC(USA) embraces family, shows ‘light of Christ’ to them

December 15, 2018

The Rev. Mary Kay Collins baptizing one of the sextuplets George Jennison

The story of a father and mother and the sextuplets baptized at First Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Virginia, was told one Sunday morning by the Rev. Mary Kay Collins.

In her sermon, before she baptized the six babies and welcomed the family into the First Presbyterian community of faith, Collins spoke of when she first met the couple from Nigeria — who had been invited to the church’s Lenten study group to share their faith story.

“A large part of their story was their longing to have children,” she said, “and waiting for a long time to have children.”

At their baptism, the sextuplets were welcomed into the life of First Presbyterian Church. George Jennison

It reminded Collins of the story in Genesis of Abraham and Sarah — and of God’s promise to them that they would have as many children as the stars in the sky, despite the fact that Sarah was 90 years old.

Before introducing a video telling the couple’s story, she asked, “Is anything too wonderful, too great, too difficult or too tough for God?”

Watch a video of Collins’ “Too Tough for God?” message with the couple’s story, which is at the seven-minute mark, and video of the baptism here.
