Presbyterian Disaster Assistance hires senior advisor on hurricane recovery

As the 2017 hurricane season draws to a close, the bulk of the work for this year’s storm season is just beginning for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. To help in that effort, PDA has hired David L. Myers as senior advisor for PDA’s 2017 hurricane recovery.

In October 2015, the South Carolina coastline was pummeled by heavy rains and flooding. A year later, Hurricane Matthew caused havoc in North Carolina damaging thousands of homes and businesses. But despite immediate response by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and a number of other agencies, the need for clean up and repair continues in both states.

Lee McDermott is concerned. Opioid addiction is rapidly sweeping out of control in his neighborhood. And while the Presbyterian pastor in a rural southwestern Pennsylvania community is not only worried for those who are struggling with these habits, he’s also troubled by the fact that many religious leaders refuse to face the problem. And many congregants don’t want to talk about it. As a result, families end up living in fear and shame.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance returns to the Philippines

It was November 8, 2013 when one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded, slammed Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. The result: more than 6,000 dead, towns and communities were destroyed and millions of people were left homeless, with no food and little hope.
