Multicultural Ministry Team Seeks to Break Down Walls that Divide

myb-May2May 2, 2016

In recent years the Presbytery of Detroit has set a goal to strengthen and transform congregations to be missional, pastoral and prophetic. One of the ways it is accomplishing this is through its teams and work groups.

Three years ago the presbytery reviewed its organization and discerned that the Holy Spirit was leading it to engage congregations in seeing God’s vision of the church as a house of prayer for all nations. To elevate the importance of reaching out, the presbytery formed a Multicultural Ministry Team. The team hopes to help congregations reflect their neighborhood and see themselves as agents of God who break down dividing walls of race and culture.

On three occasions, the Rev. Eric Law of the Kaleidoscope Institute has resourced the presbytery. Recently he led the presbytery in a study of his book Holy Currencies. In this study and in his new book, Holy Currency Exchange, Law reminds us that our call to reflect the many cultures of our neighborhood happens through exchanging “currencies.” Currencies begin in relationships with our neighbors as we share time and energy with one another. The currencies also include truth, wellness, money, place and gracious leadership.

Please pray for the presbytery as it seeks ways to support congregations, to provide a catalyst for change in their communities and in Detroit. A growing number of congregations seek the welfare of the city in which God has planted them. They hope to “lift high the cross, the love of God, and proclaim that all the world may adore his (Christ’s) sacred name.”

Loving God, help all of our congregations and members show your love to our neighbors. We hear your call through the prophet Jeremiah to seek the welfare of the cities in which we live. Guide us to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
