Matthew 25 Video Highlights
Liberty Community Church is Minnesota’s only African-American PC(USA) church. Located in North Minneapolis inside one of the city’s poorest zip codes and situated between significant interstates, which makes it a prime spot for sex trafficking and illegal drug trading, this Matthew 25 congregation revitalized the spaces of two Presbyterian churches that closed in the last thirty years and transformed them into healing spaces for the neighborhood. Through its direct services and strategic partnerships within the Presbytery and around the city, Liberty Community Church is a beacon of hope in a literal sense and in educating people about the legal and historical obstacles we must overcome to dismantle structural racism and close the opportunity gap.
How does Mathew 25 show up in worship? Worship leaders at the Presbyterian Association of Musicians‘ 2023 Music & Worship Conference sat down to talk about how the Matthew 25 vision should be part of worship, from the words of hymns, liturgy, and sermons to the way our worship can open us up to the experiences of other people and cultures. For years, the Mighty Women of St. Mark’s have worked to help residents at an encampment for people without housing near their church. As they worked with the community, the members of St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Lomita, California, recognized that another problem was that even people who could get housing had trouble staying there for various reasons. So they launched Free Butterflies, a program to support newly housed women with the community and skills they need to succeed. In this video, you will hear from people who lead the program and those who have benefited from it.
