On April 20th, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, initiating what has become the largest and worst oil spill in US history. Over the past 6 weeks, we at the Eco-Justice program have worked with congregations, clergy and communities in the Gulf Coast to figure out how we can minister to those who are suffering and help them prepare for the long road ahead. What has emerged is the need for a strong moral response to the spill.
Not a response that gets determined by partisan politics.
Not a response that overlooks the needs the of local communities in order to cater to BP and other large companies.
But a response that seeks to protect and provide for God's people and God's creation.
