New Scientific Study Shows Mountaintop Removal Should Stop

A recent study, headed by Margaret Palmer, a University of Maryland researcher, found that the mountaintop removal destroys ecosystems and should be ended.  In an article in the Washington Post Palmer stated, ""The science is so overwhelming that the only conclusion that one can reach is that mountaintop mining needs to be stopped."   The study was published in the recent edition of the journal Science.

The study was published just days after the Environmental Protection Agency approved a permit to expand the largest mountaintop removal mine in West Virginia.

Urge your congressperson to listen to the science that points to the dangers of mountaintop removal and ask them to become a co-sponsor of the Clean Water Protection Act, House Bill 1310, which would sharply reduce the amount of mountaintop removal mines.  The bill currently has 161 co-sponsors.  You can send an email to your House Representative through iLoveMountains.org
