In 2008 the General Assembly approved the Social Creed for the 21st Century. This social creed updates the 1908 "Social Creed of the Churches" with new areas pertinent to our lives today. The new Social Creed affirms the need for action on many issues from full civil, political, and economic rights for all to the abatement of hunger and poverty. The creed also calls for "Sustainable use of the earth's resources, promoting alternative energy sources and public transportation, with binding covenants to reduce global warming and protect populations most affected."
The Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy recently released "Connecting to the Creed," which gives biblical, theological, and theological background while discussing current challenges and choices related to the affirmations and action areas of the new Social Creed. This resource includes questions for study and discussion.
