James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” —Mark 10:35–45

to the left and to the right
of those displaying power and might;
in the most prominent place
at the top of the staircase;
standing tall like an oak
high above the common folk;
that’s where the faithful often set their sight
eagerly lusting after the limelight

and in our eagerness to ascend
we tend to forget, or sometimes pretend
not to know, what the gospel ordains
regarding the posture we should maintain:
the vision of God’s Kingdom entails
a different order, honest scales
common spaces, humble hearts
willingness to follow the Master’s seating chart

but instead we try to impede and outmaneuver
the access to positions, like secular rulers
exerting influence, unspoken privilege, and a tight hold
relegating to the bleachers those who don’t fit the mold

forgetting that the stage and the boxes belong
to the One who calls us to make room, to get along
and that true greatness we can demonstrate
by abandoning the tendency to dominate

Forgive us, Kneeling God,
for pursuing eminence, power and fame
while refusing to serve the stranger in your name.
Help us, Servant God,
to imitate your humble disposition
and to renounce all falsehood and ambition.

Jacobo y Juan, los hijos de Zebedeo, se acercaron a él y le dijeron: “Maestro, queremos que nos concedas lo que vamos a pedirte”. Jesús les preguntó: “¿Qué quieren que haga por ustedes?” Ellos le respondieron: “Concédenos que, en tu gloria, uno de nosotros se siente a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda”. Jesús les dijo: “Ustedes no saben lo que piden. ¿Acaso pueden beber del mismo vaso del que yo bebo, o ser bautizados con el mismo bautismo que voy a recibir?” Ellos dijeron: “Sí podemos”. Entonces Jesús les dijo: “A decir verdad, beberán del vaso del que yo bebo, y recibirán el mismo bautismo que voy a recibir, 4pero no me corresponde concederles que se sienten a mi derecha o a mi izquierda, pues ya es de aquellos para quienes está preparado”. Cuando los otros diez oyeron esto, se enojaron contra Jacobo y Juan. Pero Jesús los llamó y les dijo: “Como ustedes saben, los gobernantes de las naciones las dominan, y los poderosos les imponen su autoridad. Pero entre ustedes no debe ser así. a la izquierda y a la derecha
de quienes exhiben grandeza y poderío;
en el lugar más prominente
en la cima de la escalera del señorío;
alcanzando la altura del roble
muy por encima del barbarismo;
allí a menudo los fieles fijan su vista
ansiosamente codiciando el protagonismo

y en nuestro afán por escalar
tendemos a olvidar o solemos pretender
que desconocemos lo que el evangelio dice
sobre la postura que debemos mantener:
la visión del Reino de Dios exige
un orden diferente, balanzas sin fingimiento
espacios comunes, humildad de corazón
y obediencia al Maestro y su plano de asientos

pero en cambio tratamos de impedir y manipular
el acceso a los puestos, como en el ámbito secular
ejerciendo influencia, privilegio tácito y firme control
relegando al graderío a quienes no logren encajar
olvidando que el escenario y los palcos pertenecen
a Aquel que nos llama a hacer lugar, a la caridad
y que la verdadera grandeza la podemos demostrar
abandonando el afán de dominio y la duplicidad

Perdónanos, Dios Arrodillante,
por perseguir la eminencia, la fama y la riqueza
mientras rehusamos servir al forastero en tu mesa.
Ayúdanos, Dios Sirviente,
a imitar tu humilde disposición
y a renunciar a toda falsedad y ambición.
