Lenten Devotional: Fourth Sunday in Lent, March 11

The Prophets and the Teachings of Jesus: The greatest

Jonah 3:5 • And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.

Matthew 12:41 • The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!

Jesus came proclaiming that the kingdom of God was at hand, but people refused to believe him. He bemoaned that even the wicked people of Nineveh believed when confronted by the prophet Jonah.

Have you ever been given a charge that caused you anxiety? Jonah was given a mission he first refused. That’s how it can be when God calls us to a specific task. But what is wonderful is that God gives us the ability to do God’s will. God does not call us to do anything that God won’t enable us to fulfill. God’s anointing gives us power, courage and love.

Lord, in our service to you, show us something greater than what we have ever experienced. Amen.
