John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”And the crowds asked him, “What then should we do?” In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He said to them, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what should we do?” He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.” —Luke 3:7–14

enough with the lip service
John the Baptist seems to say
to an audience of impostors
whose lives betray their faith

we hear the words and panic
knowing that our own witness
leaves so much to be desired
we must also beg forgiveness

we seek pardon from the poor
whom we deprive through our greed
absolution from the marginalized
whose development we impede

our excesses deny the gospel
our true creed is hedonism
and even our most holy days
boil down to mere consumerism

but Advent is a season of sharing
and seeing with the eyes of the heart
the opportunities all around us
to clothe, to feed, to do our part

come, Lord Jesus, and show us the way
to use our power, privilege, and voice
to create a more equitable world
so that all creatures can rejoice

A las multitudes que acudían para ser bautizadas, Juan les decía: «¡Generación de víboras! ¿Quién les enseñó a huir de la ira venidera? Produzcan frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no comiencen a decirse: “Tenemos a Abrahán por padre”, porque yo les digo que aun de estas piedras Dios puede levantar hijos a Abrahán. El hacha ya está lista para derribar de raíz a los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no dé buen fruto será cortado y echado en el fuego”. La gente le preguntaba: “Entonces, ¿qué debemos hacer?” Y Juan les respondía: “El que tenga dos túnicas, comparta una con el que no tiene ninguna, y el que tenga comida, haga lo mismo”. También unos cobradores de impuestos llegaron para ser bautizados, y le preguntaron: “Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer nosotros?” Él les dijo: “No cobren más de lo que deban cobrar”. Unos soldados también le preguntaron: “Y nosotros, ¿qué debemos hacer?” Y Juan les respondió: “No extorsionen ni calumnien a nadie, y confórmense con su salario”. —Lucas 3:7–14

basta de palabras huecas
Juan el Bautista parece decir
a una audiencia de impostores
que traicionan la fe con su vivir

sus palabras nos causan pánico
a la luz de nuestro pésimo testimonio
pues nos urge también pedir
perdón por nuestros agravios

nos disculpamos con los pobres
a quienes privamos con nuestra avaricia
pedimos absolución a los marginados
por impedir su desarrollo con la codicia

nuestros excesos niegan el evangelio
nuestro verdadero credo es el hedonismo
e incluso nuestros días sagrados
se reducen a mero consumerismo

pero Adviento es época de compartir
y ver con los ojos del corazón
las oportunidades a nuestro alrededor
de vestir, alimentar y mostrar compasión

ven, Señor Jesús, y muéstranos la vía
de usar el poder, el privilegio y la voluntad
para crear un mundo más equitativo
donde haya regocijo para toda la humanidad
