God’s weapons
A reflection and confession based on Ephesians 6:1o–20

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak. —Ephesians 6:1o–20
Some believers claim
that to honor the great commission
it suffices to have faith,
to obey the Word,
and to proclaim salvation.
Other faithful argue
that bearing a good witness
one must expose the truth,
advocate for justice,
and cultivate peace.
And in every Christian family
we find this false division
between ardent evangelizers
and passionate activists,
as if we could run around
half naked or half dressed,
a dichotomy that often results in
absurd disagreements and painful schisms.
But Ephesians reminds us
that in order to withstand evil’s assault
we must abandon the ways of discord
and take up God’s weapons
of reconciliation, unity, and love.
Forgive us, Reconciling God,
for causing divisions in your body,
with arrogance and rivalry.
Teach us, Harmonizing God,
to work for the unity of your body,
with determination and humility.
Enable us, Loving God,
to strengthen the witness of your body,
with understanding and kindness.

Por lo demás, fortaleceos en el Señor y en el poder de su fuerza. Revestíos con toda la armadura de Dios para que podáis estar firmes contra las insidias del diablo. Porque nuestra lucha no es contra sangre y carne, sino contra principados, contra potestades, contra los poderes de este mundo de tinieblas, contra las huestes espirituales de maldad en las regiones celestiales. Por tanto, tomad toda la armadura de Dios, para que podáis resistir en el día malo, y habiéndolo hecho todo, estar firmes. Estad, pues, firmes, ceñida vuestra cintura con la verdad, revestidos con la coraza de la justicia, y calzados los pies con el apresto del evangelio de la paz; en todo, tomando el escudo de la fe con el que podréis apagar todos los dardos encendidos del maligno. Tomad también el yelmo de la salvación, y la espada del Espíritu que es la palabra de Dios. Con toda oración y súplica orad en todo tiempo en el Espíritu, y así, velad con toda perseverancia y súplica por todos los santos; y orad por mí, para que me sea dada palabra al abrir mi boca, a fin de dar a conocer sin temor el misterio del evangelio, por el cual soy embajador en cadenas; que al proclamarlo hable con denuedo, como debo hablar. —Efesios 6:1o–20
Hay creyentes que afirman
que para honrar la gran comisión
basta con tener fe,
obedecer la Palabra
y proclamar la salvación.
Otros fieles argumentan
que para dar un buen testimonio
hay que exponer la verdad,
abogar por la justicia
y cultivar la paz.
Y en toda familia cristiana
hallamos esta falsa división
entre fervientes evangelizadores
y apasionados activistas
de la cual a menudo resultan
absurdos desacuerdos y dolorosos cismas.
Pero Efesios nos recuerda
que para resistir los embates del mal
debemos abandonar la vía de la discordia
y tomar las armas de Dios,
que son la reconciliación, la unidad y el amor.
Perdónanos, Dios Reconciliador,
por causar la división de tu cuerpo
con arrogancia y rivalidad.
Enséñanos, Dios Armonizador,
a trabajar por la unidad de tu cuerpo
con determinación y humildad.
Permítenos, Dios Amoroso,
fortalecer el testimonio de tu cuerpo,
con entendimiento y amabilidad.
