From sacrifice to equity

‘Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.’ – Mark 12:38b-40

If we only praise the generosity of the widow,
but fail to denounce the selfishness of the scribes,
we have not heard the message of the gospel.
If we only praise the concern of the widow,
but fail to denounce the apathy of the scribes,
we have not understood the message of the gospel.
If we only praise the sincerity of the widow,
but fail to denounce the hypocrisy of the scribes,
we have not proclaimed the message of the gospel.
If we only praise the goodness of the widow,
but fail to denounce the corruption of the scribes,
we have not applied the message of the gospel.
Forgive us, God of Justice,
for reducing this text to a teaching
about sacrificial giving
in order to appease our conscience
while failing to commit ourselves to the struggle
to prosecute all forms of exploitation
and condemn systematic oppression.
Help us, God of Compassion,
to perceive in this text a teaching
about equitable distribution
in order to awaken our conscience
and commit ourselves to the struggle
for the end of all marginalization
and the proclamation of divine jurisdiction.

Del sacrificio a la equidad

‘Cuídense de los escribas. Porque les gusta pasearse con ropas largas, y les encanta que los saluden en las plazas, y sentarse en las primeras sillas de las sinagogas, y ocupar los mejores asientos en las cenas. Además, se apoderan de los bienes de las viudas, y luego fingen hacer largas oraciones. ¡Pero peor será su condenación!’ – Marcos 12:38b-40
Si tan solo alabamos la generosidad de la viuda,
pero no denunciamos el egoísmo de los escribas,
no hemos oído el mensaje del evangelio.
Si tan solo alabamos la preocupación de la viuda,
pero no denunciamos la apatía de los escribas,
no hemos entendido el mensaje del evangelio.
Si tan solo alabamos la sinceridad de la viuda,
pero no denunciamos la hipocresía de los escribas,
no hemos proclamado el mensaje del evangelio.
Si tan solo alabamos la bondad de la viuda,
pero no denunciamos la corrupción de los escribas,
no hemos aplicado el mensaje del evangelio.
Perdónanos, Dios de la Justicia,
por reducir este texto a una enseñanza
sobre la entrega sacrificada
para acallar nuestra conciencia
y evitar comprometernos con la lucha
por el enjuiciamiento de toda explotación
y la condenación de la opresión sistemática.
Ayúdanos, Dios de la Compasión,
a percibir en este texto una enseñanza
sobre la distribución equitativa
para despertar nuestra conciencia
y decidir comprometernos con la lucha
por el cese de toda marginación
y la proclamación de la jurisdicción divina.
