The Prophets and the Birth of Jesus: Faith amid grief

Matthew 2:18 • A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.

The prophet Jeremiah predicted this slaughter would occur. When Jesus was born, King Herod ruthlessly murdered the children of Israel, and their mothers refused to be consoled.

Terrible situations happen all the time. Sometimes close at hand, other times from afar. Our faith in God is a constant comfort as, even in heartbreak, God is accessible. Words of Scripture comfort our broken hearts as we read that “there is nothing in all creation which will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).

Lord, bless every heart burdened by pain, despair and suffering. Breathe your Holy Spirit to wipe away every tear from every eye. Amen.
