The Prophets and the Birth of Jesus: Your name matters

Matthew 1:23 • Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him “Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”

For centuries, Christians have known Jesus as “Emmanuel, God with Us.” This name is a constant reminder of the persistent presence of God.

In every culture naming a baby is a significant act done with ritual deliberation. A child’s name determines his or her success in life. The child can be named after a family member, season, event or even a thing.

What does your name signify to you and to your family? Spend some time to reflect upon your name, your heritage and your legacy. Jesus is called Emmanuel for a reason, for he is the fulfillment of God’s promise never to leave us or forsake us.

Lord, you know my name and what it represents. May the name of Jesus always be important in my life. Amen.
