Slow down, look closely
Psalm 53:2
God looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.
The closer we get to Christmas, the busier our days become with shopping, baking and wrapping tamales, as well as planning family gatherings and church services. In the midst of the preparations, there is no time to stop and smell the freshly cut pine. And rushing makes it easy to overlook small blessings and become pessimistic.
In a similar manner, the writer of Psalm 53 seems to have lost perspective as he laments over the corruption of humans. And yet, today’s reading pairs a pessimistic psalm with the angel’s promise to Mary, who is praised for her receptivity to God’s will and her wisdom. Her story is a helpful reminder that even in the darkest times, God’s light is shining. Even in discouraging moments, God’s hand is doing a new thing.

Salmo 53:2
Desde el cielo, Dios observa a la humanidad para ver si hay alguien con sabiduría que busque a Dios.
Mientras más se acerca la Navidad, más ajetreados son nuestros días haciendo compras, horneando golosinas y envolviendo tamales, así como planeando reuniones familiares y servicios de la iglesia. En medio de los preparativos, no hay tiempo para detenerse y oler un pino recién cortado. Y la prisa hace que fácilmente pasemos por alto las pequeñas bendiciones y que nos volvamos pesimistas.
Del mismo modo, el autor del Salmo 53 parece haber perdido la perspectiva al lamentarse por la corrupción de la humanidad. Sin embargo, las lecturas de hoy aparean un salmo pesimista con la promesa que el ángel le hace a María, quien es alabada por su receptividad a la voluntad de Dios y su sabiduría. La historia de ella es un provechoso recordatorio de que incluso en los tiempos más oscuros la luz de Dios brilla. Incluso en los momentos más desalentadores, la mano de Dios está haciendo algo nuevo.
