Meeting Jesus: March 13 Matthew

Monday of the Second Week in Lent

Read Matthew 9:9–13

That new rabbi in town came by my booth today. He’s already attracting followers — many who feel no love toward men of my ilk. But he called me, the tax collector, to join his ranks. It’s foolishness, but I couldn’t say no. Right there, I left my booth and followed him. They say he brings life wherever he goes, and I want to be a part of that.

When I invited him to a meal at my house, though, accusations started flying. Religious leaders took advantage of this two-for-one deal: they could simultaneously question his judgment and drag my reputation through the mud. Jesus responded that sinners like me — hey, I know who I am — are those who actually need him. Apparently he’s interested in more than just creating the right appearances; he wants to work on our hearts.

Jesus, keep me from merely putting on a show of my devotion — let me be a vehicle of your mercy.
