We have heard that it was said: “Don’t murder,”
but in the name of freedom and democracy,
we bomb innocent civilians,
invade sovereign nations,
neglect funding for education,
profit from mass incarceration,
blame the poor for their misery,
and close the doors on immigration.
Every day, God sets before us
life and good, death and evil.
Let us choose the common good,
so that we may live.
We have heard that it was said: “Don’t lust,”
but in the name of tradition and culture,
we justify male chauvinism and patriarchy,
perpetuate gender discrimination,
restrict women’s rights,
allow youth sexualization,
expose victims of violence,
and question sexual orientation.
Every day, God sets before us
life and good, death and evil.
Let us choose the common good,
so that we may live.
We have heard that it was said: “Don’t swear,”
but in the name of protection and prosperity,
we invoke deities and saints,
trivialize prayer and devotion,
print God’s name on our currency,
make promises with dishonest intentions.
speak falsely to one another,
and betray trust in personal relations.
Every day, God sets before us
life and good, death and evil.
Let us choose the common good,
so that we may live.
COME, LORD JESUS,
SURPRISE US ANEW WITH A LIBERATING WORD,
RAISING THE BAR,
SHAKING US OUT OF OUR COMPLACENCY,
AND TEACHING US TO HONOR
YOUR COMMANDMENTS’ TRUE INTENTIONS.

“Pero si apartas tu corazón y no prestas atención, y te dejas llevar, y te inclinas ante dioses ajenos y les sirves, en este día yo les hago saber que ustedes serán destruidos por completo…”

Deuteronomio 30:15-20 and Mateo 5:21-37
Hemos oído que se dijo: “No mates”,
pero en nombre de la libertad y la democracia,
bombardeamos a civiles inocentes,
violamos la soberanía de otra nación,
descuidamos el financiamiento educativo,
nos beneficiamos de la encarcelación,
culpamos al pobre por su miseria
y cerramos las puertas a la inmigración.
Cada día Dios pone delante nuestro
la vida y el bien, la muerte y el mal.
Elijamos el bien común,
para que podamos vivir.
Hemos oído que se dijo: “No codicies”,
pero en nombre de la tradición y la cultura,
justificamos el machismo y el patriarcado,
perpetuamos por género la discriminación,
restringimos los derechos de las mujeres,
permitimos la temprana sexualización,
exponemos a las víctimas de la violencia,
cuestionamos en lo sexual la orientación.
Cada día Dios pone delante nuestro
la vida y el bien, la muerte y el mal.
Elijamos el bien común,
para que podamos vivir.
Hemos oído que se dijo: “No perjures”,
pero en nombre de la protección y la prosperidad,
invocamos deidades y santos,
trivializamos la vida de oración,
imprimimos el nombre de Dios en nuestra moneda,
hacemos promesas con deshonesta intención,
hablamos falsamente a nuestro prójimo
y traicionamos la confianza de una relación.
Cada día Dios pone delante nuestro
la vida y el bien, la muerte y el mal.
Elijamos el bien común,
para que podamos vivir.
VEN, SEÑOR JESÚS,
SORPRÉNDENOS DE NUEVO CON UNA PALABRA LIBERADORA,
ELEVANDO EL LISTÓN,
SACUDIÉNDONOS DE NUESTRA COMPLACENCIA
Y ENSEÑÁNDONOS A HONRAR
LAS VERDADERAS INTENCIONES DE TUS MANDAMIENTOS.
