Come, Spirit of Truth
A resource for Sunday’s liturgy based on John 16:12–15
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” John 16:12–15
when we act as if one is better than two,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can be whole while living apart
when we hoard resources meant to be shared,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can be satisfied while millions starve
when we allow segregation in civic and religious life,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can be united while race continues to divide
when we neglect girls’ education and deny women’s reproductive health rights,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can achieve equality while females are hyper-sexualized
when we teach boys to use guns and train soldiers for war,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can be peacemakers while societies are militarized
when we condemn sexual orientation using religion as a pretext,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can be Jesus’ followers while turning our backs on anyone
when we rob workers of fair wages and benefits,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can be ahead while leaving others behind
when we refuse protection to refugees seeking asylum,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can be secure while many have no place to reside
when we tolerate disparities in sentencing and incarceration,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can be free while our brothers and sisters of color are behind bars
when we separate families through detention and deportation,
come, Spirit of truth, and free us from the lie
that we can be good neighbors while Samaritans[i] are left for dead by the roadside
when we pollute air, water and soil, and deplete natural resources,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can have a viable planet while the environment is sacrificed
when we forget that we are all made in God’s image,
come, Spirit of truth, and deliver us from the lie
that we can enjoy privilege while most of humanity is deprived

Ven, Espíritu de verdad

“Aún tengo muchas cosas que decirles, pero ahora no las pueden sobrellevar. Pero cuando venga el Espíritu de verdad, él los guiará a toda la verdad; porque no hablará por su propia cuenta, sino que hablará todo lo que oiga, y les hará saber las cosas que habrán de venir. Él me glorificará, porque tomará de lo mío y se lo hará saber. Todo lo que tiene el Padre es mío; por eso dije que tomará de lo mío, y se lo dará a conocer a ustedes.” Juan 16:12–15

cuando actuamos como si uno es mejor que dos,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos tener integridad mientras vivimos separados
cuando acumulamos los recursos que debemos compartir,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos estar satisfechos mientras que millones pasan hambre
cuando permitimos la segregación en la vida cívica y religiosa,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos estar unidos mientras que la raza nos siga dividiendo
cuando descuidamos la educación de las niñas y le negamos a las mujeres los derechos de salud reproductiva,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos alcanzar la igualdad mientras que las mujeres sean hipersexualizadas
cuando enseñamos a los niños a usar pistolas y entrenamos soldados para la guerra,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos ser promotores de paz mientras que las sociedades están militarizadas
cuando condenamos la orientación sexual usando la religión como pretexto,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos ser seguidores de Jesús mientras le damos la espalda a cualquiera
cuando le robamos a los trabajadores la paga justa y las prestaciones,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos avanzar mientras que otros se quedan por detrás
cuando rehusamos proteger a los refugiados en busca de asilo,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos tener seguridad mientras que muchos no tienen donde habitar
cuando toleramos las disparidades en las sentencias y la encarcelación,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos ser libres mientras que nuestros hermanos y hermanas de color están tras las rejas
cuando separamos familias por medio de la detención y la deportación,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos ser buenos vecinos mientras que los samaritanos[ii] son dados por muertos a la orilla del camino
cuando contaminamos el aire, el agua y la tierra, y agotamos los recursos naturales,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos tener un planeta viable mientras que el medio ambiente se sacrifica
cuando olvidamos que todos y todas fuimos hechos a la imagen de Dios,
ven, Espíritu de verdad, y líbranos de la mentira
de que podemos disfrutar de privilegios mientras que la mayoría de la humanidad está despojada
