March in March

Around the world, nations, non-governmental organizations, civil society, and individuals observe March 8 as International Women’s Day.

In New York, a March was held from Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza to Times Square. Thousands of women and men marched to call for all women’s rights to be honored and for full equality for women.

Presbyterians were among the marchers:

Many of the signs at the March referenced UN Women‘s newly launched

“Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality” initiative to galvanize government pledges for action and as part of the wider Beijing+20 campaign.

“Today, we are calling on governments, everywhere in the world, to Step It Up,” [UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka] added. “By 2030 at the latest, we want to live in a world where at least half of all parliamentarians, university students, CEOs, civil society leaders and any other category, are women. Real progress requires 50-50.”
