Advent Devotion – Friday, December 20

Reflection and Prayer by Paz Garcia (10th grade)

Luke 1:26-36

1. Have you ever felt God calling you to do something you weren’t sure you could do?

2. Why do you think God chose a teenage girl to bring Jesus into the world?

Reflection: In seventh grade, I had a vision where God sent symbols meaning that a time of despair would come, and that I would need to use my gifts to help those in need. It scared me, and I didn’t know what to do and eventually I realized how much stronger I had to become. In Luke 1:26–36, we learn that God chose a young girl named Mary to give birth to the very Son of God. God chose Mary because she was young and had much time to live and make a difference.

Prayer: I pray for the strength to become stronger and fulfill my calling, just as Mary did.

The 2013 Advent Devotions were written by Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) youth and their leaders at the 2013 Youth Triennium. Each day provides a lectionary-based Scripture passage, questions for reflection, and the students’ responses.
