Elections in the DRC

Hold the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in prayer as they go to the polls tomorrow to participate in presidential and parliamentary elections.

The political landscape in Congo is complex and unsettling.  Please pray with us for the November 28th elections.  Pray that God would appoint righteous leaders who will honor God and truly care for the needs of the people.

So writes Bob Rice, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) mission co-worker in the DRC. His article also contains a review of the DRC’s history.

The UN News Centre reports that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged politicians and voters in the DRC to ensure that the elections take place as peacefully and smoothly as possible.

He described the elections as “crucial for the country’s progress towards stabilization and development” and stressed the support of the United Nations for the electoral process.

He further called on “all political leaders and the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to exercise restraint throughout the process to ensure that the elections are held in a peaceful and secure environment.”

May the people know free, fair, transparent elections that mark steps on the journey to a just peace.
