Independence Eve for South Sudan

As these words are posted, it is early evening on 8 July 2011 in Sudan. Tomorrow brings independence for South Sudan – and significant changes for the peoples of what is now Sudan and what tomorrow will be two countries – South Sudan and Sudan.

Reports of violence continue. Plans for celebrations are in place. Fears choke at the people. Hope looms. Prayers continue:

God in your mercy, pour your grace upon all the peoples in what is now Sudan and what tomorrow will be South Sudan and Sudan. Lead them away from violence. Guide them in paths of peace. Strengthen them for these days as they build new realities. Inspire them in the challenging tasks of living indepently as Sudan and South Sudan; inspire them in the challenging tasks of living as good neighbors. Show the nations of the world, the United Nations, the African Union, nongovernmental organizations, and all who would assist in the transition ways to be truly helpful. Bless the peoples – bless all the peoples of South Sudan and Sudan. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
