International mines awareness day

Today, the world celebrates international mines awareness day.  In recognition of today, Jordan Ryan, Director of the UNDP Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery said, "Landmines and explosive remnants of war take a heavy toll on people's livelihoods, countries' economic and social development, and international peace-building efforts."

Recognizing that antipersonnel landmines are weapons of no discrimination, which injure, maim, and kill combatants and non-combatants alike (including children!) – the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has called for the United States to sign and ratify the treaty banning land mines.

The Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations continues to work for the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) policy of signing and ratification of the treaty banning land mines.
