Bringing START to a finish

Reports indicate that the Senate will vote tomorrow (Wednesday, December 22, 2010) on the new START treaty that would reduce the number of nuclear weapons held by Russia and the United States. It would also reestablish on-site inspections to monitor strategic nuclear forces.

Call the Washington offices of your Senators and urge them to vote for START (the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has called for deeper cuts in the number of weapons than those proposed under the treaty).

Five undecided Senators are key:

Senator Chambliss: GA
Senator Grassley: IA
Senator Kirk: IL
Senator LeMieux: FL
Senator McCain: AZ

If you live in one of these states, your call is particularly important.

Our colleagues with the Friends Committee on National Legislation have established a toll-free telephone number (888) 475-8162 to the Capitol switchboard.

Now is the time for the Senate to finish and vote for START – to take this step toward a more peaceful world in this season, as we await our celebration of the birth of the Prince of Peace.
