In response to the request of the Christian leaders of Iraq, here are a couple prayers. They may be used each day at noon as part of the Covenant of Prayer with Iraqi Christians or in private devotions or corporate worship.
From the Mission Yearbook for Prayer & Study
O Lord, our Holy God, the all powerful. We beseech you, in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ, to send your Holy Spirit to shade the land of Iraq so that peace may prevail in its dwellings; acts of violence, killing, kidnapping, and persecution may cease; the displaced may return to their homes; the churches may reopen their doors without fear of shells and explosions; and smiles may be seen again on the faces of children. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
From the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program
O God, from age to age you are God;
your care extends to the farthest reaches of the earth.
We pray for our sisters and brothers in Christ in Iraq,
we pray for all the people,
who have endured oppression,
who have gone through wars,
who have borne sanctions,
who have experienced the bombings of the no-fly zones,
and who now work to rebuild a stable country.
We pray for all the people.
Comfort Iraqis who grieve for loved ones.
Care for those who were wounded
in body, mind, and spirit.
Strengthen those who care for them.
Defend the people from all
who would exploit present uncertainty for personal gain.
Lead the people from violence based on faith
or other forms of the diversity you create.
Guide the people and the leaders to focus on
ending violence,
working for the public interest,
and providing for the security of the people
so together they may
create a new Iraq
where justice, freedom, and peace prevail.
We pray in Jesus Christ trusting that
you will meet the needs of the people of Iraq
better than we are able to ask.
Amen.
