U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner announced today that "the United States will work with its partners around the world to relieve all debts owed by Haiti to international institutions and to ensure grant financing to support Haiti's reconstruction and recovery from the devastating earthquake in January."
Groups such as Jubilee USA Network and the One Campaign have called for these steps as a means of helping Haiti recover from the effects of the earthquake and the poverty which grinds on the country.
The One Campaign continues to collect names on a petition to present to leaders of the G-7 industrialized countries.
