An Unconquered Soul

I saw Invictus over Christmas.

While set against the backdrop of South Africa's amazing, improbable win in the 1995 Rugby World Cup, it is really not a sports movie.

It is a tale of pain and possibility, of moving forward from monstrous evil, of forgiveness and grace and hope.

It is a tale of the human spirit – battered, beaten, bruised, brutalized – and indomitable.

It is an ode to Nelson Mandela and his vision for his country and his efforts to bring that vision into reality and his unconquerable soul.

Morgan Freeman turns in an absolutely amazing performance as Mandela.

It is not a perfect film, no film is. But it is worth a watch and it will end up in my library when it comes out on DVD.
