Faith leaders to Congress: Close Guantanamo

Pm-lilbox-torture Join faith leaders. Call Congress to close Guantanamo.

More than 40 senior leaders of major faith groups in the United States, including the Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)  have signed a letter addressed to the leaders of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, with copies to Members of Congress, calling on Congress to do everything in its power to close Guantanamo now. In this letter, the religious leaders express their belief that closing Guantanamo Bay is necessary for the nation to continue healing the wounds left by this sad chapter of its history.

This initiative was organized by the National Religious Coalition Against Torture (NRCAT).

NRCAT has created an Advent resource [pdf] of scripture commentary and sermon notes for use by Christian clergy.

NRCAT is encouraging congregations to show the video Ending US-Sponsored Torture Forever and use a corresponding discussion guide between now and April 1, 2010.

General Assemblies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) have addressed the issue of stopping torture on several occasions.
