Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) has introduced legislation, S. 843, which will close the gun show loophole so that individuals will not be able to exploit gun shows and similar events to buy and sell guns without criminal background checks.

Similar legislation has been introduced in the House of Representatives as H.R. 2324. Representative Michael Castle (R-DE) is the lead sponsor.
The 218th General Assembly (2008) of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) adopted
an overture calling Presbyterians to work with legislators “to ensure that all persons buying guns at gun shows undergo a background check, close the gun show loophole in the thirty-five states where it remains open."
