Dr. Kenyatta Gilbert, a nationally recognized expert on African American preaching and the dean of Howard University School of Divinity, shared his thinking on “Prophetic Preaching in a Tone-Deaf Culture” during a recent online presentation for New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. The Governing Board of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC) is pleased to announce that Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie has been elected to serve as President and General Secretary of the ecumenical organization. She is the first African American woman to serve as both President and General Secretary of the organization.
About 20 minutes into Wednesday’s 90-minute webinar on prophetic preaching, the Rev. Dr. Kenyatta Gilbert paused to answer questions. After one about preaching in “purple” churches (a mix of political conservatives and progressives in the pews) Gilbert got this question from one of the 30 participants, a pastor also serving a purple congregation: Have I spent enough time understanding the complexity of the lamentation of these people?
Renowned biblical scholar Dr. Cain Hope Felder may have been a Methodist, but he had fans among Presbyterians, too.
Felder, who taught for decades at the Howard University School of Divinity and before that at Princeton Theological Seminary, died Tuesday at the age of 76.
“Buckle your seat belts, Louisville Seminary,” the Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), told a packed Caldwell Chapel Friday during the inauguration of the seminary’s 10th president, the Rev. Dr. Alton B. Pollard III. “A new day is coming to this institution, a new day that has been ordained by God. Praise be to God for what God has in store for this work of ministry and faith.”
