Minute for Mission: Earth Day

In the first quarter of this year, we have experienced some severe weather occurrences in most parts of our country — fire, flooding, drought, wind and snow. Globally, the same is true. It is no longer far from most of our minds how we are connected to, and dependent on, the earth.

Fire destroys sanctuary but not spirits

Never has a lectionary passage been more providentially timed. Just four hours after worship ended on Sunday, Jan. 2, a major fire erupted in the sanctuary of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Spokane, Washington, the result of what fire officials determined was an “overloaded circuit.”

Relishing a slower pace of life

In her introduction to a recent episode of the “New Way” podcast, the Rev. Sara Hayden quotes St. Thomas More, who once said, “Soul cannot thrive in a fast-paced life because being affected, taking things in and chewing on them requires time.”

Jim Ferguson of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Newburgh, New York was recently checking out a do-it-yourself project on YouTube. Nothing unusual for him, since he is a long-time volunteer with the Habitat for Humanity PresbyBuild group in Hudson River Presbytery. The group is currently working on its 10th house and has raised almost enough funds for house 11.
