In December 2018, I participated in a World Mission global partner consultation in Nairobi, Kenya. The gathering was attended by Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) mission co-workers serving in Africa and leaders and members of the various African churches and organizations with whom we partner in God’s mission. The purpose of the consultation was to hear about the work and witness of ministry on the African continent, and to gain insight for the development of the future strategy of World Mission.

Two women turn past pain into present hope

In 1993 fighting erupted within the small South Sudanese town of Yei (pronounced “Yay”). Machine guns mounted atop land cruisers and men wearing fatigues launched shells of ammunition into the air. Mothers and grandmothers hurried out of gunfire with babies tied to their backs and cooking pans seated on their heads. They emptied into forests, pushed through branches and waded through streams, moving up gravel-covered hills and down shadowed valleys. They assembled at border crossings bulging from the influx of refugees. Thousands flowed across the border of the world’s newest nation into United Nations-sanctioned areas in Uganda.

World Mission’s Northeast Consultation encourages boldness and action

More than 30 people representing congregations, new worshiping communities, mid councils, racial-ethnic caucuses, Young Adult Volunteer alums, mission networks and others gathered by invitation of Presbyterian World Mission in early April. The gathering, held at Stony Point Center, was the second of three U.S. consultations to discuss and discern God’s mission in partnership. The first day of the three-day consultation coincided with the 51st anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who is remembered for his legacy of courage, not fear.

Beautiful feet

A delegation representing the Niger Mission Network (NMN) saw beautiful feet in Niger — many of them — during a recent 13-day partnership trip hosted by the Evangelical Church in the Republic of Niger (EERN). Participants learned some of the ways the good news of Jesus is proclaimed by Christian brothers and sisters in a country where the vast majority of its citizens are Muslim.

Violence follows peaceful elections in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s voters went to the polls in large numbers on Monday, July 30, in “harmonized elections” for president and members of Parliament. Domestic and international election observers commended the voting process as orderly and generally peaceful.
