Presbyterians are well represented in the 90 categories awarded Thursday

LOUISVILLE — Communicators with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) — those who tell Presbyterians’ stories with words, photos, videos, public relations plans and podcasts — were rewarded for their work throughout 2020 on Thursday with recognition from the Associated Church Press during its online Best of the Church Press Awards.
ACP’s Executive Director, the Rev. Gregg Brekke, said 61 news organizations submitted 767 entries in 90 categories. Awards were given in three tiers: Award of Excellence, Award of Merit and Honorable Mention.
The journal Unbound won an Award of Excellence for “Starry Black Night: A Womanist Advent Devotional.” The Rev. Lee Catoe is Unbound’s editor.
Unbound also received an Award of Merit for “Ashes to Rainbows: A Queer Lenten Devotional.” Recognition went to Catoe, the Rev. Jess Cook and the Rev. Alex McNeill.
Presbyterian News Service’s the Rev. Paul Seebeck earned an Award of Excellence for his work on a Matthew 25 video on building congregational vitality.
Brekke himself won an Honorable Mention award for a photo he took for a virtual Good Friday service on behalf of the Presbyterian Foundation.
Randy Hobson, a photographer and videographer with the Office of the General Assembly, won for his video of the Co-Moderators’ report to the 224th General Assembly.
Presbyterian News Service Editor Mike Ferguson won an Award of Merit for his story about Knox Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, “Redeeming a racist bequest.”
PC(USA) communicators received an Award of Merit for their coverage of the 224th General Assembly. Rick Jones, communications director for the Office of the General Assembly, headed up the news operation throughout the first-ever online General Assembly.
Seebeck took home a Best in Class Honorable Mention for his story, “Seattle pastor survives coronavirus.”
The Presbyterian Outlook, an independent publication, received six awards. Winners included Leslie Scanlon, the publication’s national reporter, and its former editor, the Rev. Jill Duffield.
