By the end of World War II, there was a great urgency and need for global peace, and from that the international organization the United Nations was founded. Today we come together to celebrate the creation of the United Nations as the world’s only global organization and the one place where the world’s nations can come together to discuss shared problems and find solutions that bring peace and prosperity that creates a better world and future for all people.
As we mark the anniversary of such an important time in history, we continue to see the enduring commitment that the United Nations has on seeking peace, protecting human rights, international justice and fighting for a sustainable future for each and every one of us. I have the great privilege of working on justice issues with the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations and I am consistently reminded of the Matthew 25 call, to actively engage in the world around us and to care for the most vulnerable.
In the past few years, we have dealt with many daunting challenges, and it is our goal to seek justice, peace and prosperity not only for people but also for the planet, and the United Nations gives us a place to do so. The United Nations plays a critical role in this world today and will continue to look to the future and to achieve new goals in order to create a more just world. The United Nation’s history is still being written, and it’s an honor that Presbyterians are a part of it.

O loving and gracious God, on this United Nations Day we are reminded that peace is needed today more than ever. In this divided world, we pray for unity, and we pray for strength for all who are called to serve at the United Nations. Help us, O God, to come together as communities and countries as we work toward peace and justice for our global community. Amen.
