Lenten Devotional: Palm/Passion Sunday: March 25

The Prophets and Passion Week: A grand entrance

Zechariah 9:9 • Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Luke 19:29–30 • When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.”

This event marks the beginning of the most holy week in the life of our faith. Many commemorate Passion Week with pageants, re-enactments and stations of the cross. Palm Sunday worship is filled with palms shaped into crosses, and donkeys have their 15 minutes of celebrity.

Jesus continues to come into our lives quietly, peaceably and humbly. And when he comes, pick up branches, wave them in the air and shout, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord” (John 12:13). Don’t hold back!

Lord, may we celebrate your coming into our lives. Amen.
