The Prophet Isaiah and Jesus: God’s Spirit proclaims good news

Luke 4:17–18 • . . . and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.”

The first sermon Jesus preached was from Isaiah 61. There was intentionality on his part to read this message from Isaiah as his initial proclamation.

God has good news for all, and Jesus is the ultimate manifestation of God’s good news. Everyone needs to hear some good news. To the economic poor God promises to provide help. To the spiritual poor, God promises the kingdom of God. To the emotional poor God promises comfort. Regardless of your state in life, God has good news for you to meet your situation.

Lord, we become truly free through faith in the name of Jesus. Amen.
