The Prophet Isaiah and Jesus: Sparing a dime

Isaiah 58:7 • Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?

Matthew 25:35–36 • For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.

Jesus and the prophet Isaiah share a special concern for the poor upon which we base our call to alleviate poverty. Matthew 25 has become the hallmark of charitable mission. Ministries are named Matthew 25, and congregations include it in their mission statements.

Our relationship with God is linked to our relationship with each other. As we help others, our lives are transformed. As we venture forth in God’s service, we discover a sacred connection with each other. In Christ Jesus, we are one.

Lord, help me to be connected with you as I am connected with others here on earth. Amen.
