Lenten Devotional: Second Sunday in Lent, February 25

The Prophet Isaiah and Jesus: Can you hear me now?

Matthew 13:14 • With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says: “You will indeed listen, but never understand and you will indeed look, but never perceive.”

Jesus and the prophet Isaiah declared that revelation was kept from those whose purpose was not to serve God but themselves.

For those seeking divine truth, this is the worst possible time to live. Communication has never been so widely available but so poorly utilized. Charges of fake news and alternative truths turn us away from God’s reality.

We cannot allow cynicism to cause us to disregard the transforming power of the Word of God. We go to church Sunday after Sunday, hearing far more sermons than we can ever remember, but trusting that in each one God has something positive to say that will enrich our lives. God is asking each of us, “Can you hear me now?”

Lord, open my heart that my ears may hear your message. Amen.
