Seek truth, avoid shortcuts
Psalm 25:5
Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.
When I was in college, in the late 1970s, CliffsNotes were popular study guides for exams or used as a shortcut to avoid reading the whole book. The yellow and black notebooks were sold in the campus bookstore, alongside the textbooks; now they are online, available for download.
In the same manner, those who seek spiritual insights sometimes turn to the Bible and other sacred writings hoping for CliffsNotes-type of enlightenment. But the writer of the Psalms reminds us that discerning God’s ways is a process that takes time and a disposition to learn. Advent is a season of waiting that invites us to avoid shortcuts and instead cultivate patience and openness.
What readings, places and people are your sources of wisdom?

Todo el día espero en ti; ¡enséñame a caminar en tu verdad, pues tú eres mi Dios y salvador!
Cuando yo cursaba la universidad, a finales de 1970, las guías de estudio CliffsNotes eran populares como repaso para exámenes o método abreviado para evitar leer un libro entero. Los cuadernos amarillos y negros se vendían en la librería del campus, junto con los libros de texto; ahora se ofrecen en línea y son descargables.
Del mismo modo, quienes buscan conocimiento espiritual a veces se acercan a la Biblia y otros escritos sagrados esperando hallar iluminación al estilo de los cuadernos CliffsNotes. Pero el escritor de los Salmos nos recuerda que discernir los caminos de Dios es un proceso que requiere tiempo y disposición para aprender. Adviento es una época de espera que nos invita a evitar los atajos y en cambio a cultivar la paciencia y la receptividad.
