First Week of Advent
Hear cries, understand groans
Psalm 102:19-20
[The Lord] looked down from his holy height … to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die.
My work as a hospice chaplain involves time at the bedside of dying patients. Near the transition between life and death, they become withdrawn and nonverbal. They communicate mostly through physical gestures, moans and groans. Hospice workers teach family members to observe these subtle but effective ways of communicating and to respond accordingly.
The Scriptures often describe God as one who hears the cries of the oppressed or, as the psalmist says, one who is able “to hear the groans of the prisoners, [and] to set free those who were doomed to die.” During Advent, we proclaim that God indeed hears us and sets us free. We recommit ourselves to God’s work of liberation and shalom.

God of Advent, give us ears to hear the cries of your children and to respond with caring actions. Amen.

Oye los gritos, entiende los gemidos
Salmo 102:19-20
Desde su alto santuario, el Señor observa … para oír el clamor de los cautivos y dar libertad a los sentenciados a muerte.
Mi trabajo como capellana de hospicio requiere tiempo junto a la cama de los moribundos. Al acercarse la transición entre la vida y la muerte, los pacientes se vuelven más retraídos y no verbales. Se comunican mayormente por medio de gestos físicos, quejidos y lamentos. El personal de hospicio enseña a los familiares a observar esas formas sutiles pero efectivas de comunicarse y a responder debidamente.
Las Escrituras a menudo describen a Dios como alguien que oye el lamento de los oprimidos o, como dice el salmista, alguien que puede «oír el clamor de los cautivos y dar libertad a los sentenciados a muerte». Durante Adviento proclamamos que Dios en verdad nos oye y nos libera. Y nos comprometemos nuevamente con la obra divina de liberación y shalom.
