More compassion, fewer ornaments
Psalm 33:5
[The Lord] loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.
The earth is increasingly full of human-generated waste. Despite the decades-long emphasis on the three Rs of the environment — reduce, reuse and recycle — we throw away billions of glass, metal and plastic bottles and jars every year. We also buy much more than we need, and a lot of our waste is packaging materials.
Advent and Christmas in the developed world are plagued by excessive consumerism and waste. Every year, the holiday shopping season starts earlier, with purchases made in stores as well as online. And church people are as guilty as everyone else of engaging in practices that are far removed from the simplicity of a stable and a manger.
How can you display more compassion and fewer ornaments this holiday season? Wrap more people with hugs and fewer presents with paper?
God of Advent, make us eager to stop littering your world and to instead fill the earth with your steadfast love. Amen.

El Señor ama la justicia y el derecho; la tierra está llena de su misericordia.
La tierra está cada vez más llena de desechos generados por la humanidad. Aunque llevamos décadas enfatizando las tres R del medio ambiente — reducir, reusar y reciclar — tiramos miles de millones de botellas y envases de cristal, metal y plástico cada año. También compramos más de lo necesario y mucho del desperdicio es a causa del envoltorio.
El Adviento y la Navidad en el mundo desarrollado están asediados por el consumismo excesivo y el derroche. Cada año la temporada de compras para las fiestas comienza más temprano, con adquisiciones en las tiendas y en línea. Y la gente de la iglesia es tan culpable como el resto de sumarse a prácticas que están muy lejos de la simpleza de un establo y un pesebre.
¿Cómo puedes exhibir más compasión y menos adornos esta Navidad? ¿Envolver a más gente con tus abrazos y menos regalos con papel?
Dios del Adviento, anímanos a dejar de ensuciar tu mundo y en cambio a llenar la tierra con tu amor inagotable. Amén.
