Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. – Matthew 16:24

You call us to follow,
which requires obedience
and the willingness to trust
that your Word shows us what is best,
but we would rather lead.
You asks us to deny ourselves,
which requires humility
and the willingness to admit
that our excesses hurt people and the earth,
but we would rather indulge.
You invite us take up our cross,
which requires sacrifice
and the willingness to accept
that true worship demands surrender,
but we would rather win.
Forgive us, God of grace,
for refusing to walk the path of discipleship,
choosing instead our selfish ways,
amassing power and wealth,
neglecting the call to be your partners
in the creation of a just world.
Teach us, God of mercy,
to say “no” to our ego and “yes” to your voice,
loving neighbor as ourselves,
sharing our lives and our bread,
embracing the call to be your agents,
in the building of an equitable world.

La senda del discipulado

A sus discípulos Jesús les dijo: “Si alguno quiere seguirme, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz, y sígame”. – Mateo 16:24
Lea el pasaje aquí: Mateo 16:21-28
Tú nos llamas a seguirte,
lo cual requiere obediencia
y la voluntad para confiar
en que tu Palabra nos muestra lo que conviene,
pero preferimos nuestra vida liderar.
Tú nos pides negarnos a nuestros caprichos,
lo cual requiere humildad
y la voluntad para admitir
que nuestros excesos dañan pueblos y la tierra,
pero preferimos nuestro apetito saciar.
Tú nos invitas a cargar nuestra cruz,
lo cual requiere sacrificio
y la voluntad para aceptar
que la entrega es la verdadera adoración,
pero preferimos nuestras batallas ganar.
Perdónanos, Dios de gracia,
cuando rehusamos caminar por la senda del discipulado,
eligiendo a cambio la vía del egoísmo,
amasando el poder y la riqueza,
descuidando el llamado a ser tus socios y socias
en la creación de un mundo justo.
Enséñanos, Dios de misericordia,
a decir “no” a nuestro ego y “sí” a tu voz,
amando a nuestro prójimo como a nuestro propio ser,
compartiendo nuestra vida y nuestro pan,
acogiendo el llamado a ser tus agentes
en la construcción de un equitativo.
