Meeting Jesus: March 10 Servant at the Wedding Banquet

Friday of the First Week in Lent

Read John 2:1–12

We were in serious trouble — the newlyweds’ reputation was at stake. Somebody miscalculated, and we had more party than wine. Seriously, you can’t have a celebration without wine. It isn’t done. The head steward was off trying to figure out a solution, when a guest dragged her son over and told us to do exactly as he said. Then, as if that wasn’t crazy enough, this guy directed us to fill the purification urns with water and to take a sample to the steward. He took one sip and hightailed it over to the groom to hound him for saving the best wine until last.

We servants stood there slack-jawed. What kind of a guy makes 150 gallons of wine — really good wine, I’d add — out of bath water? And what mother has the chutzpah to put her grown son up to a task like that?

Jesus, give us the faith not to underestimate what you’re capable of doing in, around, and through us.
