A resource for Sunday’s liturgy based on Mark 12:38–44

As he taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.” He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” —Mark 12:38–44

extravagant tributes

offering collections

our eyes have been trained
to notice these things
our hearts have been taught
to desire these things
for such is the mindset
of worldly power and fame
and the church often follows suit
rather than showing the path
of justice and truth

but the gospel calls us
to adopt a lifestyle
that notices instead
the humble presence
the simple gesture
and the modest gift
of an anonymous widow
and her meager offering
lest we fail to perceive
the quiet workings
of the Spirit in our midst
laying in a manger
or hanging from a tree

Forgive us, God of Humility,
for valuing privilege, wealth and prestige
more than the poor’s sacrificial offerings.
Remind us, God of Abundance,
that everyone has something unique to contribute
to the wellbeing of the church and the community.
Redeem us, God of Liberty,
from the poverty of spirit and the shortage of compassion
that doesn’t allow us to give ourselves without reservation.
Enable us, God of Possibilities,
to see all your children with new eyes,
and to treasure every person, every race and every tribe.

Escasas ofrendas

Y en su enseñanza les decía: “Cuídense de los escribas, a quienes les gusta andar con vestiduras largas, y aman los saludos respetuosos en las plazas, los primeros asientos en las sinagogas y los lugares de honor en los banquetes; que devoran las casas de las viudas, y por las apariencias hacen largas oraciones; éstos recibirán mayor condenación.” Jesús se sentó frente al arca del tesoro, y observaba cómo la multitud echaba dinero en el arca del tesoro; y muchos ricos echaban grandes cantidades. Llegó una viuda pobre y echó dos pequeñas monedas de cobre, o sea, un cuadrante. Y llamando Jesús a Sus discípulos, les dijo: “En verdad les digo, que esta viuda pobre echó más que todos los contribuyentes al tesoro;  porque todos ellos echaron de lo que les sobra, pero ella, de su pobreza, echó todo lo que poseía, todo lo que tenía para vivir.”  —Marcos 12:38–44, Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

tributos extravagantes

colectas de ofrendas
grandes sumas
informes de tesorería

nuestros ojos han sido entrenados
para notar estas cosas
nuestros corazones se han acostumbrado
a desear estas cosas
porque esa es la mentalidad
del poder y la fama mundanal
y la iglesia a menudo hace lo mismo
en vez de mostrar la senda
de justicia y verdad

pero el evangelio nos llama
a adoptar un estilo de vida
que note en cambio
la presencia humilde
el gesto sencillo
y el obsequio modesto
de una viuda anónima
y su escasa ofrenda
para que no fallemos en percibir
el obrar silencioso
del Espíritu en nuestro medio
cuando yace en un pesebre
o cuelga en un madero

Perdónanos, Dios de la Humildad,
por valorar el privilegio, la riqueza y el prestigio
más que las ofrendas sacrificadas de los pobres.
Recuérdanos, Dios de la Abundancia,
que cada cual puede contribuir algo singular
al bienestar de la iglesia y la comunidad.
Redímenos, Dios de la Libertad,
de la pobreza de espíritu y la escasez de compasión
que no nos permiten darnos de todo corazón.
Ayúdanos, Dios de las Posibilidades,
a ver a todos tus hijos e hijas con nuevos ojos,
y atesorar a cada persona, cada raza y cada tribu.
