Now we can ask our Senators to vote in favor of this important first step to reduce the global nuclear threat, prevent the further spread of nuclear weapons and make the world safer.
Here are four action steps to take in support of the treaty:
- Send an email to your Senators asking them to vote to ratify the treaty.
- Call your Senators. The Capitol Switchboard is 202-224-3121.
- Contact your state legislators. Ask them to sign on to a letter urging U.S. Senators to ratify the treaty.
- Call your Senators' local offices to schedule a meeting during the Memorial Day recess (May 28 to June 7).
The treaty will reduce each country’s deployed strategic nuclear warheads to 1550 – a cut of roughly 30% cut. The U.S. and Russia possess 95% of the world’s nuclear weapons. These weapons are a liability, not an asset. They don’t make the world safe or address today’s real threats to our security. New START sends a clear signal to the rest of the world that the U.S. and Russia are serious about reducing the nuclear threat.
To take effect, the treaty must be supported by at least two-thirds of the Senate, or 67 U.S. senators.
The 215th General Assembly (2003) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) called for the United States and Russia to reduce the number of warheads to 1,000 each.
