Rev Nicole Ashwood served as an inner-city English teacher for four years in Jamaica before accepting the call to ministry in 2000. The rich diversity of relationships with colleagues, students and families helped to prepare her for some of her experiences in ministry as she has had on several occasion utilized the gifts and skills honed in the classroom with her constituents in the margins of St Louis (during her 3 years of seminary training), Kingston & St Andrew (Jamaica – her first place of call) and across the gamut of the Reformed Caribbean world where she now operates.
Rev Ashwood is an advocate for the voiceless, in particular youth and women, as she serves with the WCC as a Mover for Gender Justice and works with the WCRC and the CWM (Council for World Mission) on areas regarding gender-based violence. She recently served as a participant in the recently concluded WCRC consultation on Human Trafficking in Cuba. She enjoys writing liturgies and preparing Bible studies on behalf of those whose voices are not easily heard. Combining her passion for youth with her enjoyment of music and drama, Rev Ashwood often experiments with contemporary secular pieces as part of the liturgical experience. She has been trained in Jamaica (B. A. (Hons. – UWI 1996); post-graduate Dip. Ed (Hons. – Mico Teachers’ College 1998)); in the US (M.Div. – Eden Theological Seminary 2003); and in Switzerland (M.Ec – University of Geneva 2004). Rev Ashwood is passionate about empowering the church for mission, and now serves as the Education in Mission Secretary for the Caribbean and North America Council for Mission – CANACOM.
