In a Midwestern city where the cost of housing can affect residents’ ability to thrive, Westminster Presbyterian Church of Madison, Wisconsin is helping residents to make ends meet through various efforts to feed people in the community.
One in 10 American adults owes significant medical debt, and that debt causes two-thirds of all bankruptcies. To the Rev. Stacy Cavanaugh of Union Presbyterian Church in Monroe, Wisconsin, that wasn’t acceptable.
In a year like no other, five faith communities in southeastern Minnesota have worked together to clear more than $2 million in medical debt for 1,057 households in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Not unlike many urban centers around the nation, Madison, Wisconsin is undergoing what can only be called a renaissance. Lured by work in the healthcare technology and other industries, hundreds of young adults are pouring into the downtown area to work and live in the transformed environment of housing, shopping and recreation.
