The Portuguese Language Presbyterian Council (PLPC) is a Presbyterian organization that supports Portuguese-speaking churches. Its work includes equipping and resourcing existing Portuguese-speaking worshiping communities, helping mid councils develop new worshiping communities and providing leadership training at regional and national church events.

The Rev. Dr. Jorge Abdala is the moderator of the PLPC and is the pastor of the Brazilian Presbyterian Church San Mateo and Latinos Unidos en Cristo in California.  Earlier this summer, the council held its annual meeting in Kissimmee, Florida, which proved to be a remarkable gathering of faith, fellowship, and shared mission. With more than 25 Brazilian pastors and other leaders from across the country in attendance, the event showcased the rich diversity and deep commitment of those serving in Portuguese-speaking ministries, as well as Brazilian pastors who faithfully lead Spanish-speaking congregations.

This year’s theme, “Sabbath — Lembra-te do dia de descanso, para o santificar” (Êxodo 20:8), Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy (Exodus 20:8),” served as a powerful reminder of the spiritual importance of rest and sanctity in our busy lives. The theme resonated deeply with attendees, some of whom have been shepherding their faith communities for over two decades.

Abdala says, “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the office of Hispanic Latino-a Intercultural Congregational Support, Racial Equity & Women’s Intercultural Ministries, the National Presbyterian Hispanic Latino Caucus, the New Hope Bible Church (our gracious host), the presbyteries, the PLPC Executive Board, and all who contributed to the success of this event. Your presence, dedication and unwavering commitment to the growth of our council and the service of our Portuguese-speaking congregations are deeply appreciated. As we move forward, may the spirit of this gathering continue to inspire and guide us in our shared mission. Together, we are stronger, and together, we will continue to spread the light of Christ in our communities and beyond.”

Associates for REWIM work to be connectional with the congregations that they support, many of which are new worshiping communities across the PC(USA). Without their efforts, many pastors and lay leaders would not know about the resources and support available to them. REWIM associates play a crucial role in fostering relationships, sharing best practices and providing training that empowers congregations to thrive. Their commitment ensures that pastors and lay leaders are connected to a broader network of support, which is vital for nurturing new worshiping communities. Through their work, they help cultivate innovative ministry practices and encourage collaboration, ultimately strengthening the church’s mission and outreach in diverse contexts.

As we recognize and celebrate the works and contributions of Spanish-speaking communities, we invite you to follow Presbyterian News Service this month for more inspiring stories.
