How the Church can become a healing force in America’s racial divide

Presbyterian Outlook webinar to feature Kerry Connelly, author of ‘Good White Racist?’

by Westminster John Knox Press | Special to Presbyterian News Service

LOUISVILLE — So many white people — good intentioned, Christian white people — believe that they live outside of racism or do not see the racist system at all. In doing so, they remain complicit in it. In order to break free and to find justice for our Black siblings in Christ, white Christians must wrestle with their white identity to find their anti-racist selves beneath.

To begin this movement, Kerry Connelly, author of “Good White Racist?: Confronting Your Role in Racial Injustice” (Westminster John Knox Press, 2020), presents with The Presbyterian Outlook a free webinar at 2 p.m. Eastern Time on Sept. 15: Holy Imagination + Race: How the Church Can Be a Healing Force in America’s Racial Divide. Based on the themes in Connelly’s book, this free 90-minute webinar offers tools for congregational members and leaders and serves as an introduction to the anti-racist work churches must begin to do in order to heal America’s racial divide.

In this webinar, participants will:

  • begin to understand and deconstruct white identity and how it operates in the world.
  • understand the process of this deconstruction, and how it resembles the stages of grief.
  • learn how to practice agency over embedded whiteness, unconscious bias and inherent racism.
  • get practical tips on how to combat systemic racism.
  • acquire language and tools to join others in their process of deconstructing whiteness and other systems of dominance.
  • learn how the church can be an agent of change and justice in the current racial divide.

Participants need not to have read the book to attend. The webinar will serve as an introduction to the book and a jumping-off point should church study groups, book clubs, sessions and other leadership groups, or individuals seek to process these themes in a fall book study, either in person or in a socially-distanced setting. Copies of “Good White Racist?: Confronting Your Role in Racial Injustice,” are available for 35% off at the PC(USA)Store. For group orders of 30 or more books, please contact sales@wjkbooks.com. A downloadable discussion guide for individuals and groups is also available.
